Gornergrat ja Game Over

Sää alkoi selkenemään puolenpäivän aikaan, joten koko päivää ei ollut hukkaan heitetty. Pohdin vaihtoehtoja. Lopulta päädyin, että en halua missata Gornergratia säiden takia, joten lähdin siis ostamaan junalippua.

Weather started to clear up around noon so the whole day was not lost. I thought about the options and in the end I decided that I do not want to miss visiting Gornergrat in case the weather will be bad rest of the week.

Menin junalla ylös asti. Maisemat olivat komeita, vaikka Matterhorn oli harmillisesti pilvien peitossa. Jäätiköt olivat yllättävän vaisun oloisia, kasvihuoneilmiön raiskaamia lumipuroja soramontun pohjalla.

I took the train all the way to the top. Scenery was very nice, unfortunately Matterhorn was covered with clouds. The glaciers were really downbeat. Small snow streams middle of all the gravel.

Paikalla oli reilu 40v englantilainen taidemaalari myymässä teoksiaan. Juttelin pitkän aikaa hänen kanssaan, kun minulle ei mihkään oikeasti kiirekään ollut. Jo nuorena hän ihastui Matterhorniin ja 20 vuotta sitten hän tuli Zermattiin maalatakseen sen. Sillä tiellä edelleen. Inspiroivaa.

There was an artist from England, in his fourties, selling his art works. I stopped to chat with him since I was in no real hurry. He had fallen in love with Matterhorn when he was young and 20 years ago he came to Zermatt to paint the mountain. He's still on that trip. Inspiring.

Ennen kuin lähdin Gornergratiin huomasin, että peukalon pään kokoinen alue ihoa oli irronnut oikeasta säärestä, polvitaipeen kohdalta. Kohdasta, jonka olin polttanut auringossa melkein viikko sitten. Before I left for Gornergrat I noticed a thumb sized area of skin peeling off on my calf where I had sunburned it. I put a big bandage on it to prevent it rubbing against the pants. When I got back to the hostel and was about to take a shower, I removed the bandage. It removed skin from the area it had covered, a bit smaller than my palm. It doesn't look too bad, but if you don't like nasty stuff like that, don't open the link.

Aamuksi on sovittu Breithornin keikka, joten laitan siihen siteen ja käyn siellä kukkulalla kun kerran sitä varten tänne asti tulin. Ylihuomiseksi varasin lennon kotiin.

I had agreed the Breithorn climb to be done on tomorrow morning. I will put a gauze on the leg and just soldier on, because I will climb the hill since that's why I came here in the first place. I booked a flight home day after tomorrow.

Zermatt, hidas aloitus

Toista päivää Zermattissa. Sää ei helli lomalaista, vettä on satanut melkein koko ajan. Eilen en tehnyt muuta kuin makasin sängyllä ja lepuutin jalkoja, etenkin polvia. Tänään kävin Alpin Centressä tiedustelemassa Breithornin keikkaa, mutta sääennuste päivittyy iltapäivällä, jolloin päätös tehdään. Alustavasti näyttää mahdolliselta mennä heti aamusta.

Second day in Zermatt. Weather isn't kind, it's been raining almost all the time. Yesterday I just lay in bed resting my legs and knees especially. Today I visited the Alpin Centre to check the situation about the Breithorn climb, but answer was that the weather forecast will update in the afternoon, so the decision will be made then. At the moment, it looks possible to do in the morning.

Zermatt on kaupunki, joka on rakennettu pienkerrostalohotelleista, kaikki enemmän tai vähemmän samannäköisiä. Katutason tilat ovat kauppoja tai ravintoloita. Zermatt is a city build from small apartment houses as hotels, all looking more or less alike. Street level floors are used for shops and restaurants. Streets are filled with tourists, who multiply the population. There are less than six thousand locals. Zermatt is a car-free area. Only small, electric powered, vehicles can be seen whizzing around trying not to hit the tourists.

Keli on selkenemässä, joten tänään suunnittelin tekeväni pienen (esitteen mukaan 3h 35min) kävelylenkin.

Weather is getting better, so I'm planning on doing a small hike. The brochure says it takes three and half hours.
